Welcome to ‘Martini Bottom.’ North Kansas City gets a pop

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Kan-Sas Ci-Ty.

Vignettes, the pop-up bar space in North Kansas City, has unveiled its next theme: popular Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants. Called “SpongeBar,” it opens Aug. 18 at 2376 Armour Blvd.

Previous themes from pop-up bar owner Ed Schmalz’s team featured Taylor Swift, Barbie and Schitt’s Creek.

Schmalz said the space is now taking visitors to “Martini Bottom,” a play-on SpongeBob’s home of Bikini Bottom in the show. It’s one of many references visitors will see when they visit the bar for some F.U.N.

“It’s going to feel like a good place for some nautical nonsense,” Schmalz said.

You can grab drinks like the “Chum Bucket,” based on the character Plankton’s restaurant or get some of “Grandma’s Cookies,” which SpongeBob enjoyed from his grandma in an episode titled “Grandma’s Kisses.”

You can also hope to get some wisdom from the “Magic Conch,” a drink inspired by the episode where SpongeBob and his neighbors Patrick and Squidward got lost in the woods and had to use a conch shell to get back home.

And you can’t have a SpongeBob experience without Krabby Patties from the Krusty Krab — the pop-up bar’s take on the hamburger.

Outside of the themed drinks and foods, visitors can experience different events every day it’s open, including:

Stand-up comedy on Tuesday

Trivia on Wednesday

Music bingo on Thursday

Live music on Friday and Saturday

Karaoke on Sunday

Schmalz said putting these themes together never gets old. He gets joy out of seeing the visitor’s faces having fun hanging out with each other at the bar.

The space hasn’t transitioned to SpongeBob yet since their Barbie-themed “Malibu Dream Bar” is open until Saturday. But as soon as that ends, Schmalz and his team will tear down the pink and bring out the sea blue.

His team’s goal is to build SpongeBob’s pineapple house and set it up at the entrance before the pop-up bar opens. They’re also working on hanging jellyfish from the ceiling and setting up a bubble-blowing area.

Book reservations on the Vignettes website or OpenTable.

Reservations cost $5 per person and it’s ages 21 and up on Fridays and Saturday and open to all ages Sundays through Thursdays.
